Pipes burst at Jersey City school

By Melissa Hayes/The Jersey Journal
January 05, 2010, 4:46PM

Several pipes burst at The Kennedy School (School No. 9) in Jersey City while students were on holiday break.
?It?s back to normal now, a couple pipes burst,? district spokeswoman Paula Christen said today. ?Some of the classrooms had water throughout them.?

The pipes burst at the Mercer Street school on Dec. 29.
Christen said she did not know the cost of the damage or repair work, but said it would likely be covered by the district?s insurance.

Superintendent Charles Epps Jr. was in a meeting and could not be reached for comment.

The district hired William J. Guarini Inc. to do the repair work. Guarini hired several subcontractors to complete the project before students returned to school.

Christen said it could have been age or just the frigid temperatures that caused the pipes to burst.

But Board of Education member Gerald McCann wrote off the age of the pipes, noting that School 29 is over 100 years old and hasn't had problems.

He said someone should have been monitoring the heat in the schools.

The Kennedy School is attached to Ferris High School, which did not see any pipes burst last week.

?It?s not going to freeze if the heat?s on,? McCann said. ?It means someone?s not attentive to their job. If there?s a problem with the pipes, that?s a different issue.?
