A Jersey City man was in critical condition when rushed into surgery after being shot five times in Greenville on Wednesday night, officials said.

At 10:15 p.m., police officers on patrol were flagged down near Bidwell and Ocean Avenues, where they found the 22-year-old Bidwell Avenue man lying in a puddle of blood on the ground, reports said.

The victim had been shot in the right abdomen, left buttocks, right arm and twice in the right side of his back, reports said, adding that he complained of being in severe pain.

An ambulance responded and the wounded man was rushed to the Jersey City Medical Center, where he was in emergency surgery within minutes. Doctors at that time said he would be under the knife for two to three hours, reports said.

Officers were not able to interview the victim before he went into surgery.

A witness said the gunman fired a silver handgun several times while chasing the victim east on Bidwell and then south on Ocean Avenue, reports said.

The gunman then ran back to Bidwell, where he got into a car and fled west on Bidwell toward Martin Luther King Drive, reports said.

The gunman is described as being around 21 years old, standing 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-7, and weighing 130 to 140 pounds, reports said. He was wearing a black hat, black hooded sweatshirt, a vest, and red and black Air Jordan sneakers, reports said.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call the Jersey City police tip line at (201) 547-JAIL.
