A Jersey City man was shot and wounded by an Englewood detective on Saturday, northjersey.com reports.
A Jersey City man was shot and wounded by an Englewood cop over the weekend after he attacked a woman and turned on the detective who ran to help, northjersey.com reports.
The woman, an Englewood resident who owns a club in Jersey City, had just filed a police report on Saturday, saying 37-year-old Edward M. Smalls had threatened her safety over the phone, police told the Web site. The woman drove to her Pindle Avenue home with the detective following her as a safety precaution.
She parked at about 6:40 p.m., and Smalls ran toward her from down the street and grabbed her by the throat, police told the Web site. The detective ran toward the struggle, identifying himself, and Smalls let go of the woman and charged the detective, police said.
The detective saw what police later identified as a razor blade in Smalls? hand and fired at him, striking him in the lower left leg, police said.
Smalls underwent surgery for a compound fracture to his leg at Hackensack University Medical Center, the Web site said. The detective was taken to Englewood Hospital & Medical Center where he was treated and released and is undergoing treatment for post traumatic stress, which is department protocol, Deputy Chief Lawrence Suffern is quoted as saying.
