Stampede and chaotic scene at Lincoln-Snyder football game in Jersey City

By Ron Zeitlinger/The Jersey Journal
October 09, 2009, 9:16PM

When a fan at tonight's high school football game between Lincoln and Snyder yelled that someone in the bleachers had a gun, hundreds of people attempted to rush out of Cochrane Stadium at Caven Point, causing a stampede, police said.

Jersey City police Lt. Edgar Martinez said all South units, Emergency Services units and Gang units were called to the scene at about 8:30 p.m. to restore order and aid any people who were injured.

It could not be determined how far along the game was, but "if it was still going on, it stopped at that point," Martinez said.

A short time later, police responded to shots fired near Bayside Park on Garfield Avenue, not far from the Caven Point athletic complex.

Martinez did not have any reports of injuries, he said, nor could it be determined that someone in fact had a gun at the game.
