Gun taken by police in car stop

Jersey City Police yesterday arrested a convicted felon who had a loaded revolver after stopping him on a traffic violation Saturday morning, according to reports.

Jason Vilardo, 38, of Third Street in North Arlington, was charged with weapons possession, and possession by certain persons not to carry a weapon - because of a prior felony conviction for aggravated assault in May 2003. Plainclothes cops from the Violent Crimes Unit were in an unmarked car on Kennedy Boulevard at around 11:20 a.m. when they saw a green four door Buick ignore a stop sign and after following him and seeing him ignore a second stop sign, pulled him over at Morton Place and Kennedy Boulevard, police said.

As one of the police officers approached the driver-side door, he noticed Vilardo put his hand in his right jacket pocket and refused an order to take it out, police said.

One of the officers then grabbed his hand and found a .22-caliber revolver loaded with two hollow point bullets in Vilardo's pocket, reports said.

He was also issued summonses for failing to stop at a stop sign and another for driving on a suspended license, reports said.
