Liberty State Park becoming an urban wildlife refuge

Newsday
April 22, 2008

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - A contaminated section in the middle of Liberty State Park will be transformed into an urban wildlife refuge.

Federal and state officials say they're planning to put $32 million into turning 234-acres in the park in Jersey City into a mix of freshwater wetlands, grasslands, hardwood forests and a saltwater marsh.

Work could begin over the summer.

The area has been fenced off and closed to the public for three decades.

But there is an ecology debate about the project. Some environmentalists say there needs to be a thorough cleanup of the land.
