8 Jersey City cops subdue carjack suspect

by Charles Hack
Monday March 23, 2009, 10:30 PM

After scuffling with police, a Jersey City man was arrested Friday for allegedly trying to carjack a Honda CRV at Pacific and Johnston avenues, reports said.

Derrick Beverly Dominno, 33, of Manning Avenue, was charged with resisting arrest, carjacking, and aggravated assault on a police officer, reports said.

A shaken 28-year-old Ridgefield Park resident told police she was sitting in her car about 6:58 p.m. when a man -- who appeared to have a gun in his pocket -- tried to force her door open, reports said.

But she was able to slam and lock the door before the man fled, reports said.

Police caught up with Dominno walking west on Johnston Avenue, reports said.

When they ordered him to stop, he just turned around and laughed and held his hands close to his waistband, reports said.

When the officers approached, Dominno punched them in the head and chest, reports said. He then ran about 30 feet and turned about and head-butted one the officers in the chest, reports said.

It took eight cops to finally subdue Dominno, who appeared to be high on narcotics, reports said.

Dominno was taken to the Jersey City Medical Center before he was cleared to be taken to the Hudson County jail, reports said. The officers refused medical treatment.
