Attention Hamilton Park Residents:
Please be advised that early in the morning on Thursday, December 20, 2007, our neighbor's car parked in front of their residence on 8th Street between Coles and Monmouth was burglarized.
The front passenger window was shattered. The burglar reached into the car & rifled through the interior. They attempted to steal the seat warmers attached to the driver's and passenger's front seats and stole CD's from the glove compartment.
The Police were called and a report was filed with the East District.
If anyone witnesses a burglary in progress, or any suspicious activities, please call the East District immediately: 201-547-5477.
Please remain vigilant. We watch out for each other.

Tonight! Mon, Nov 12, DJCW Meeting @ 7PM, Grace Church, 2nd Street (Erie/Jersey Ave). Entrance through Red Doors.
Tonight is the deadline for becoming involved with the Community Engagement Consortium. At tonight's DJCW mtg, 7PM, entrance through red doors of Grace Church, 2nd Street between Erie and Jersey Ave, we will take info from anyone interested. Also, the owner of the "Sneaker Room", Suraj, will be present to answer any questions regarding his business. There have been some in the community who started a petition about his business and we thought it only fair to Suraj to let him introduce himself to us, present his business and answer any queries from those interested in his business. Either Captain McDonough or one of his representatives will be there tonight to inform us of recent crime activity. To all,
In response to recent reported crime activity in the
area of Hamilton Park zone (6th to 12th st , Marin to
Brunswick sts) patrols have been directed to the area
of Hamilton Park area .
Last evening around 2200 hours plainclothes spotted a
vehicle following a woman with shopping bags. The
vehicle occupants spotted the plainclothes officer and
fled from the scene. The vehicle occupants were
shortly apprehended in the West District on Virginia
ave by patrol units.
The occupants were subsequently identified in a series
of robberies and burglaries in Jersey City. One of the
suspect(s)was identified as the person who robbed a
female in the area of Pavonia and Brunswick sts on
November 7th at approx. 2200hrs. Two male adults and
one female juvenile are now in custody.
If anyone knows of someone who was a robbery victim
but hasn't reported it to the police in the last few
weeks please contact the East District Detectives at
547-5066 or e-mail the Community Relations Officer at
jcpdeastdistrict@yahoo.com .
Lastly; I spoke to the Port Authority Police
Department relevant to the traffic gridlock problem
occurring on 12 and 14th sts at Marin and Erie sts.
PAPD and JCPD will meet shortly to discuss impact and
solution(s).

Hello East District Command,
I wanted to let you know about an incident last night. My bike is locked up outside of my house on Fifth between Erie and Manilla near Hamilton Park. Someone attempted to steal it. The kryptonite lock had been severed 3/4 of the way through. I am fairly certain it was our dog that scared the person away. My bike is safely indoors now and thought it important to inform you of the incident.

In addition, as stated before, the most effective way to add your voice is to come to the monthly meetings and to ask your questions and voice your concerns directly to the Captain and join us in finding solutions. Thanks for your advice. I called the police and told them about both suspicious activities and she told me there's nothing they can do unless I call during the 'act' on either one (man on bike lingering etc.). She wouldn't report anything or take information down. So I guess I just wait.
Also, I read about the mugging on 5th and Jersey. I am petrified. What can I do to protect myself? We need more police presence, I want to be told what I can do to demand more foot patrol. What can I have in my purse to protect myself? Pepper spray? Bear spray? I don't carry valuables but still, they don't know that - all they see is a purse. This is getting ridiculous, again - I pay too much tax to be scared.

Attached please find an updated report of streetlights that are out in downtown Jersey City area. Two of the lights are by the Roberto Clement baseball field (6th St. between Manila Ave.and Marin Blvd). Those lights have been reported several times but they still don't get fixed. Any status on those particular streetlights?
This report also contains some streetlights in Hamilton Park which are out. One of the Hamilton Park area residents reported those lights to the Downtown Jersey City Watch group, along with the following comments:

The incident on Sunday, October, 14, 2007 at 8th and
Monmouth St. occurred at 12:35 a.m.
The actors descriptions are as follows: 2 adult black males, thin build, approx. 5'10", one wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt and jeans, and the other wearing a red hooded sweatshirt with 'New York' written on the back and jeans.
Please be advised, and inform all, that a unit is and will continue to be assigned to the Hamilton Park area on a daily basis during the evening hours.

Just a clarification on the double-parked cars, double parked cars who are not actively loading and unloading could be potential car theives, personal robbers, or drug dealers. If you do not see exchange of money or if their pace is not suspicious, then it can be completely innocent. On one car patrol, we saw such actors double parked near a honda, we passed them and smiled. An hour later, the same actors were double parked near another honda on another street. We soon saw them leave the area once we passed them again. Sometimes, we will never know but if they see you and they leave immediately maybe you did scare them away or maybe it was just time for them to leave. Trust your own instincts. If it does appear suspicious, then call the non-emergency number at 201.547.5477. Report that a vehicle, black, honda accord, 4 door, lic plate # 555aaa has been double-parked for some time and does not reside in the area. Any of these crimes can occur as soon as it gets dark, so be on alert. Thanks again! Also, thanks to all those members whose "double-parking" suspicions have led to arrests for car theft and drug dealing -- it's more than a handful so thanks again! Pam

Thank you Officers Camacho and Veogara for walking on our Hamilton Park Patrol last Friday, October 19th. Also special thanks for the Hamilton Park Residents (humans and pooches) for coming out. We were lucky it wasn't raining! Special thanks to our Greenville Resident who hopes to learn a few tips for a patrol in his area. A few residents, who noticed the police and our group, were first alarmed when they saw us but were soon relaxed once they learned we were working on crime prevention. We made a list of street lights that were out and noted trees that needed to be trimmed. We also greeted neighbors and made note of trees that should be trimmed. It's been said a thousand times and I'll say it again, "a patrol is a simple attempt to create a presence on the block". WE ARE NOT FIGHTING CRIMINALS! A patrol does not have to be a formal event, it can be 2 neighbors chatting away and greeting people. The more people on the street, the less likely someone would want to commit a crime on that street. Also, when parking your car, take a few minutes to make some extra circles. Take notes of license plates that are doubled park. The following day, you can email us your notes and we will forward it to the police. Tips like these can be learned at the JCPD Community Engagement Consortium which meets every 3rd Thursday of the month. Below is an invitation from Officer Reilly of the East District who is looking for someone to participate. It's a terrific opportunity to meet with other Jersey City Community Leaders to discuss how to work with the police and help them prevent crime. And I can't urge residents to keep up a regular dialogue with the police dept. at the community meetings. They need the constant information from residents like "john doe lives at 555 18th St. and deals heroin". Thanks and hope to see you at the Pathmark patrol on Thursday, Nov. 29th. Pam FROM OFFICER REILLY: Please be advised in May 2006 the Community Engagement Consortium was established in Jersey City and consisted of 30 residents and 10 Police Officers. The Community Engagement Consortium is designed to bring law enforcement officials and concerned citizens together to identify community concerns. It also provides assistance in the development of an action plan to improve quality of life in neighboring communities. Since May 2006 we have met on a monthly basis (the third or forth Thursday of each month) with a guest speaker (representatives from the Police Department as well as representatives from other city agencies) and discuss issues on a city level. We usually meet at 140 Martin Luther King Blvd., the Mary Bethune Community Center at 6:00 p.m. We are currently seeking two (or more) new members as one of our members is unavailable due to increase in work load and another due to pregnancy and other community commitments. There are in fact known addresses for drug activity that are watched by the Narcotics Unit and not that what you see is necessarily such, but err to the side of cautious concern. Report what you observe as suspicious as you've described above, give the East District the address and let them do their job. Where I live downtown, we noticed similar activity on our street and it turned out to be a notorious known haven for drug couriers and dealers. The Narcotics Unit made arrests related to that address and the activity on our street has lessened though still active.

Another question. As I'm home a lot I have noticed since we've moved in that a brownstone across the street has a lot of people of all shapes and sizes knocking on the window and door of this brownstone (sometimes 3 times/day or more). I originally was suspicious of drug activity as sometimes the person would knock and knock and wait on the steps and if no one answered they'd go but would linger for a while, sometimes by car but mostly on foot. Sometimes people looked homeless, sometimes it would be a dad with his kids. But the people in that brownstone don't look suspicious, I never see who comes to the door, often they don't so evidently these people knocking don't have apointments. The main people in the place are older, one wears a hat that looks like a veteren's beret and gets picked up sometimes in a city-type car.
I thought maybe there was a doctor or shrink administering something to homeless people or maybe he was just a kind man who counselled them or gave them money. I'd hate to report something that seemed like I was just a nosey/petty neighbor. Who knows? Maybe I am! lol. I did find it dropped off for a while but then it started to happen again. One guy who did that last week ended up talking to the older women in the building for a while. Maybe there's a pastor living there. I know I see more because I'm home so much. Where's the line between cautious neighbor and nosey?

I have seen the description of that man on the bicycle on 5th and Jersey, Hamilton Park area on a regular basis. I work from home and I've seen him frequently on our street. I've also seen him (or someone similar on a bike) go through our garbage late at night when we had our recycling out (we have had bank fraud and wondered if we forgot to shred some confidential information).
He's always hanging around or rather I see him frequently and I'm not sure what to do - he's not doing anything but loitering.

Rain or Not, Hamilton Park Patrol Still ON Friday, 10/19 at 8pm. Meet at the Gazebo
Rain or Not, the Hamilton Park Patrol w/Guardian Angels is still on for tonight, Friday, October 19th at 8PM. Meet at the Gazebo. If it is still raining we will patrol by car and we have one Jeep Liberty at present and anyone else please bring your vehicle too. Captain McDonough has informed us that he will have a unit stop at HP in preparation of our anti- crime walk and meet with area residents who plan to walk/drive the neighborhood. We have found that incidents of car theft rise during the rain and that suspicous actors have been identified during such patrols if it is raining. Hello everyone! I've received a great response from members about a patrol.
It's getting darker earlier in the evening which invites the negative elements. We need to create a presence on our own blocks. Creating presence by standing in front of your house or circling your block a few times while parking are easy steps. Greeting people from, across the street and knowing your neighbors are additional ways to keep the streets "filled with eyes and ears". We NEVER confront criminals. We are not the police. We are only creating a presence and calling in suspicious activity. Learn more tips at the Hamilton Park Patrol on Friday, 10/19 at 8pm. Bring the dogs! Bring the kids if its warm! We will check out street lights and as we walk. Shaggy from the Guardian Angels and a few of his volunteers will be there. The JCPD East District will also be made aware of our patrol. JCPD always are patroling in their cars and usually honk to let us know that they're with us. If it rains, we will go by car. Car theft is high during rainy nights. Thanks! Pam

In response to the HP complaint of suspicious behavior
in the area of 8th and Coles st the East District plainclothes officers observed and arrested a similar looking suspect breaking into an automobile in the area of 146 Coles st on Oct 10 approx 712PM. If your neighbors witnessed any criminal acitivity in this time frame and neighborhood area please advise. I will forward their names to the East District detectives to follow-up.
