First, build your window boxes out of reclaimed, historic barn planks
http://www.blacksfarmwood.com/07_12_03.html Make sure they're held together with historic nails: http://www.vandykes.com/product/02220266/ or better yet, microbrew your own glue from rendered animal carcasses (VERY historic) and, of course, only heirloom tomatoes will do: http://www.heirloomtomatoes.bizland.com/ Need manure? I live in Van Vorst on the 3rd floor and have had window boxes for three years. And no one else in the building ever had any.
Go for it

Forget about these historic busybodies.
If your own building's rules will allow you to put out windowboxes, by all means do it. Let the so-called historic maven and his cronies better spend their time addressing the problem of people doing things that are really inappropriate. Good for you to want to plant flowers for all of us to look at and enjoy.

Just do it. The historic police will have a hard time determining which tennants in your building did or didn't have windowboxes 100 years ago. If they come around, drop a flowerpot on their head.

Check with your condo association, and if no rules apply, then plant away.

Not sure where to direct this question - anyone know anything about whether or not I need permission from the Historic Police to put up window boxes on the 3rd floor if window boxes already exist on the 1st floor? Or worse, will they prevent me from doing so unless we also put them up on the 2nd floor for appearances sake (I only own the 3rd fl., & just want window boxes so I have something to look at)?
Just don't wanna spend the $$$ on the stuff only to have them yell at me. I'm in VVP, and I know that there are some things they can stop & some things they don't care about. Thanks!
