Just got 2022 Q3 tax bill. It is a whopping 33.3% increase from 2021 Q3! This is not acceptable!

Jersey City school board approves nearly $1 billion budget in close vote

Published: May. 06, 2022, 3:53 p.m.
By Jake Maher | The Jersey Journal

The Jersey City Board of Education finalized its $974 million budget for the 2022-23 school year Thursday night, capping off months of debate about the balance between fiscal responsibility and the district’s responsibilities to its students.

In the immediate aftermath, board members seem more eager to put the experience behind them than to discuss their vote.

We are paying for the pay raises that former Jersey Journal reporter, Terrance McDonald wrote about on May 1, 2019, "...for the last six steps, ranging from 8% to 11%."

Has JC school enrollment gone up or down since 2020?

News report:

Enrollment in New Jersey schools drops from 2020-2021 school year by 41,000

https://rumble.com/v109u8z-enrollment- ... school-year-by-41000.html

The report mentions suburban schools. Curious if the same trend is in the urban ones as well.

Jersey City councilman urges state to study local income tax up to 1% to help fund $1 billion school budget

Jersey City Bergen-Lafayette Councilman Frank Gilmore is urging the state to study the feasibility of creating a local income tax of up to 1% to help fund the $973.8 million Jersey City school budget.

Gilmore announced Thursday afternoon his plan to present a resolution at the April 13 city council meeting. He wants to know how much revenue could be generated by the local tax.

Politicians came to JC in the mid-1970s to ask the public to vote on the income tax. They said this tax would pay for public schools. I believed them and voted for the income tax, now I pay an income tax and a growing school tax. The politicians lied to us.

W/o getting into the political leaning (because Republicans can also get labeled in their own ways), would be more productive to discuss this in terms of the actual numbers and possible solutions.

The reality is the state is going to stop funding JC schools. The shortfall has to be made up from within the county/city.
* How much can real estate taxes be increased realistically to be similar to other parts of the state?
* There is probably a bunch of expensive homes owned by foreign nationals/entities. Could those be taxed at a higher rate?
* We do have commercial real estate - what rate does it pay?

On the cost side:
* Cost per pupil:
* Ratio of admin staff vs education staff and their salaries.

Jersey City mayor doubles down on slamming BOE for raising school taxes

Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop doubled down on his stinging criticism of the school board for increasing property owners’ school taxes by $1,600 “for a largely failing public school system.”

On March 22, a day after the $955 million school budget was approved, the administration took a shot at the “bloated salaries” of district leadership, saying district officials and the board “have not looked at any common-sense changes that have been recommended to them for years.”

The increase is $1600 per $500k assessed. In addition, an increase from last year of $1000 per $500k assessed will be added on top. City negated the increase last year with COVID funds but that was a one time thing. So, expect $2600 per $500k assessed value next year.

Jersey City school board delays vote on $955 million budget as it looks to ease taxpayer pain

Through five hours of a special Jersey City Board of Education meeting Thursday night there were many questions, but few answers.

On a night when the nine-member panel could have approved a $955 million spending plan for the 2022-23 school year that carries a possible $2,400 tax increase, it decided to punt the question until at least Monday.

The options are trimming the budget closer to the current year’s $814 million by slashing programs and possibly jobs, or come up with revenue sources that would at least reduce the tax hike. Cutting the tax levy by $100 million would reduce the average school tax bill to $1,121, but the board had few solutions on how to raise that other $100 million.

The last articles written by Terrance McDonald of the Jersey Journal were the massive raises given by the school board to teachers, so essentially - they are liars. Salaries are the reason for tax increases. Taxes went up last year, but Fulop used covid funds in the budget to shelter the impact to protect his re-election. JC is accepting more affordable housing which pays nothing to the school system, I have always been against affordable housing because it puts more taxes on the small homeowner, there is nothing in the city or state charter that says, other people should pay for their taxes especially school taxes. Also, our rent control laws are not like most cities, there can be no tax pass alongs, since rent control is under the Consumer Price index, another group of residents will not feel the impact of this massive tax. It is time for JC to fix their rent control laws. It is also time for JC to sue to state since the sales tax and income tax were passed by state residents to pay for education and not have it on property.
