Thank God that business owner has the balls to say the truth no matter how harsh it is to hear. I'm going to make it a point to go to that Dairy Queen now with the kids in tow.

The comment from the owner of Miss America Diner says it all, she explained we are paying extra taxes for no extra services. She lamented the fact there is no public parking for shoppers, something the city should fix.

I remember years ago when there was an attempt at cleaning up West Side Avenue in between Duncan and Lincoln Park. Canopies went up in front of the businesses and it looked nice for a while, but there was no follow up.
I went to school up there in the sixties and you couldn't have asked for nicer neighborhoods and great neighborhood businesses. But when a generational shift and flights of families to the suburbs occurred, the area went into a downward spiral from which it hasn't recovered.
In time it'll fall into the kind of creeping decay that embraced Monticello, Jackson and Ocean Avenues and the developers and hi rise moguls will filter in and add the finishing touches to a once beautiful part of Jersey City.

Brian Becker, owner of the Dairy Queen and an adjacent lot, would pay $1,773. Becker, 68, echoed Heir's comments, saying the city can spend all the money it wants to clean up West Side Avenue and it won't help. City officials pushing for the SID are "out of their frigging minds," he said.

"It's not about the money. It's about the people who live there," Becker said. "They clean those streets six days a week. It's the people that live in the city that just don't care."

Not disagreeing with him, but those are pretty harsh words for a business owner for whom most customers are (most likely) from the area. What a way to crap all over them.

Council approves new biz district in Jersey City after 4-hour hearing

JERSEY CITY — The City Council approved the creation of a tax-funded business district on the West Side on Wednesday after a four-hour hearing that included emotional pleas from business owners urging the council to halt the plan.

The council adopted the measure by a 7-1 vote, with only Council President Rolando Lavarro voting no. The district, known as a special improvement district and funded with a new tax on all commercial properties inside its boundaries, will be the city’s seventh. Proponents say the SID will pay for added security, litter cleanup and marketing, among other items.

Imagine if the tax roll was managed better and these services where paid from that, like they should be.
