PATH and NJ Transit officials said additional trains and buses will be added to encourage drivers to use mass transit instead

Beginning Monday morning, extra PATH trains will be added on the Newark to World Trade Center, Journal Square to 33rd Street, and Hoboken to 33rd Street lines between 7 and 10 a.m.
The added services should be able to accommodate up to 14,500 additional passengers.

WTF? They can just add trains that will accommodate 14,500 more passengers??? WHY HASN'T THIS BEEN DONE PREVIOUSLY???

Just to put the number in perspective, they are talking about adding less than two trains per line per hour, or about 5 additional trains for each line. It's not a HUGE bump in capacity. Most likely, they are expanding the usual rush hour frequency to include an extra train in the early morning, and two or three more after the usual wind down around 9:30 AM.

Right. We should do nothing until we have the perfect solution. Got it.

Huh? Just pointing out that the added capacity is likely being added at the beginning and tail ends of the normal rush hour frequency period. Adding capacity during those times will likely help with the current situation, as people will go to extra lengths to deal with the "emergency" situation, but it is not the kind of solution that would help much long term. As seen in other PATH related threads, most people's reaction when told to leave earlier, or later, is to reply that doing so is not practical, or possible.

I am all for added capacity, but also realize that the system is, at the moment, running at almost full capacity within its given/stated schedule. Once the signal upgrade is completed, allowing for trains to run closer together, and increased length trains are implemented, we will see much needed relief. Of course, the problem with the elongated train plan is that it is only being implemented for the EWR/WTC line.

Three left lanes on Route 139 westbound, just past Jersey Avenue, will be closed for emergency bridge repairs following a fire under the structure last night, New Jersey Department of Transportation officials said.

Route 139 westbound was shut down last night at approximately 7:45 p.m. because of a fire under the bridge near Cole Street that forced officials to redirect traffic away from the westbound Holland Tunnel.

Structural engineers evaluated the bridge overnight and determined two right lanes could be reopened, but the department is doing additional evaluations today to determine the extent of damage.

The three left lanes will be closed until further notice, officials said.

Route 139 eastbound toward downtown Jersey City and the Holland Tunnel will not be affected, officials added. The Holland Tunnel into New Jersey remains open, but delays are expected.

Drivers will still be able to access the ramp to the New Jersey Turnpike Extension to I-78, officials said.

There's a fire underneath 14th st, near Coles St. It's under control now.

They've closed 14th St (Holland Tunnel exit rd) leading up to the covered roadway (139) and Turnpike/78, sounds like the beams supporting the ramp might have been comprimised.
