With his guilty plea to money laundering and conspiracy charges and promised cooperation, the state agreed to write a letter to immigration officials saying Zuberi should not be deported, and to recommend that he be granted parole at the first eligibility hearing. Mastermind behind scheme to bribe dozens of doctors sentenced to 8 years in prisonRehan Zuberi admitted bribing health professionals for referrals to his imaging centers. The mastermind of a scheme to bribe dozens of doctors for referrals to imaging centers he owned around North Jersey was led from a Morristown courtroom in handcuffs on Tuesday morning after being sentenced to eight years in prison and ordered to pay $1 million in restitution. Rehan "Ray" Zuberi, 48, a Pakistani citizen and a resident of Boonton, provided evidence that led to the prosecution of 17 doctors and chiropractors as part of a plea agreement. For every five people he helped the state to prosecute, he was to receive a reduction of six months in the recommended 10-year sentence. http://www.northjersey.com/story/news ... tors-referrals/625268001/

By John Heinis/Hudson County View
Hudson County Superior Court Judge Mitzy Galis-Menendez dismissed the second degree commercial bribery charge against Fritz, 48, on Thursday, according to documents obtained by Hudson County View. Specifically, the judgement of acquittal says that Fritz ?was found not guilty at a non-jury trial,? meaning a jury was waived and Galis-Menendez made her decision after a bench trial. Fritz, whose office is in Journal Square, was first tried on the case late last year, ultimately concluding with a hung jury on October 6. Fritz was also initially charged with healthcare fraud and ?knowingly acting as or using a runner,? but those charges were dismissed on September 13, 2016, the ruling says. The same charges were tossed in a nearly identical fashion during Roque?s case. Fritz was indicted just days before Roque in June 2015, with the state attorney general?s office accusing him of referring approximately 4,500 scans to medical imaging facilities controlled by Rehan Zuberi in exchange for approximately $500,000 in kickbacks between 2006 and 2013. Zuberi was the state?s key witness in Roque?s case, claiming he bribed him twice at the mayor?s office, but his credibility took a hit when the defense brought out his lavish lifestyle and prior convictions. Howard Brownstein, Fritz?s attorney in the matter, declined to comment beyond the judge?s ruling. More

US healthcare is simply broken compared to other countries. Amazes me that we haven't extended consumer protections beyond the FDA.

I am sure this is an issue much more prevalent than people are willing to admit or believe. The medical profession is under a lot of stress to turn a profit, or even break even, which is why we have doctors rushing you in 15 minutes or less, and a whole litany of other complaints. A lot of it is actually out of their hands (insurance companies essentially tell doctors how to run their practices...) but, of course, there is no justification for this kind of stuff. But, seriously, is it ANY surprise that this is going on?? I am sure lots of people who go to doctors are told to get x-rays, ct scans, and other medical imaging procedures, to help "diagnose" what are probably nothing more than simple problems. Be an informed consumer/customer and use your common sense.
