I would be very careful eating anything grown in open lots in Jersey City. Chromium, and other contamination is widespread due to industrial ore tailings and by products being given to people for free decades ago to be used for fill, for landscaping.
I had a garden when I lived in town, but all in raised boxes, with commercially bought topsoil.

Yesterday morning I took my kid to the pediatrician (in the Heights). Looking out the window whilst waiting for the doctor I noticed a property next door had a fenced in parking area with animals instead of cars.
I counted multiple chickens (I think one rooster, but not sure), several rabbits, a duck, and the fattest woodchuck I have ever seen in my life. It was a pretty cool setup that looked very clean (chicken coops can stink something awful).
