I'm a life long Democrat but voted for the republican county exec and the independent assembly people. I knew there was no chance in hell they'd win but I think the HCDO has been too powerful and full of too many cronies for too long.

On the bright side, I also voted yes on the question, only later realizing that it was a non binding referendum.

This is the first time since 1989 that the Assembly has been the top ticket race on the ballot. So turnout is very low. Mayoral elections will be the same year as Gubernatorial elections which should draw more.

Having said that. Awfully thin margin.

Funny - those vote totals are similar (but lower than - Sterling Waterman had 7500 votes) to the 2010 BOE totals when the election was still held in April. Kind of splashes a little cold water on the "higher turnout in November theory". Not completely, but it does say something.

Its really interesting how close the margin is on the public question is and also how few votes/low turnout there was on this. I would argue that this is not nearly enough of a public mandate (due to low participation) to merit a switch.
