It just gets better and better.
Forest City and G&S Investors (the developers of Metro Plaza) have partnered with Green Villain on putting graffiti inside the old Pesp Boys building before it gets demolished. Pep Boys worked with us on the exterior.
70 artists,
30,000 sq ft of walls (inside and outside), and
a century's worth of expertise.
Here's a press release on the project (PDF). Google's using their Trekker technology (developed for Street View) to photograph in interior and exterior. All that a more will be online in the near future and Green Villian's exhibition in Google's online Cultural Institute.
We're be having an open house on Saturday, June 27, starting at 12 noon: DJ's, food, and wall-to-wall art.

From Sunday's Jersey Journal:
Quote: The Pep Boys store that was tagged closed last week and is set to be demolished next week, said Greg Edgell, who worked with the company's district manager to get the go-ahead to tag the the outside of the shop. http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/20 ... _legal_home_on_jerse.html

Google Cultural Institute gives users worldwide views of Jersey City street art
Some of the best new murals in Jersey City's street art boom are joining the ranks of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Palace of Versailles in a Google initiative providing digital access to the world's cultural treasures. Green Villain, one of JC's street art powerhouses, has been hosting entertainment events in the Greenville neighborhood and beyond since 2009, when they were based in an old Clorox Bleach factory. More recently, GV head Greg Edgell has been focusing on helping turn Chilltown into an outdoor gallery. Last year, Green Villain commissioned works by artists like Enoe, Kem5, Jerkface, SP One, Rime, Post and Mes. Most of the murals can be found in Bergen-Lafayette, and often feature an evolved graffiti style that both adds vibrancy to local neighborhoods while paying tribute to JC's urban roots. People around the world will now be able to see Jersey City's unique streets through the Google Cultural Institute, which provides first-person walking views (think Street View on Google Maps) of museums and cultural institutions. http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/20 ... s_users_worldwide_vi.html

http://www.fatcap.com/crew/aids.html http://www.jerseygraf.com/category/crews/aids-crew/ I believe there was an AIDS crew in Chicago back in the 1980s. for them, one of the meanings of "AIDS" was "artists inventing def styles." I have no idea whether there's any link between the AIDS writers around JC and those Chicago writers.

Not sure of this, but is the AIDS crew affiliated with whomever was tagging "AIDS" all over personal property in JC for years?
If so, good to see the AIDS crew putting their energy to more constructive, positive initiatives.

"Ghetto" on the left' "art" on the right.
If you look closely you'll see that one of the writers on the left is Then One, who recently curated a project at Aqueduct:
http://www.thenoneart.com/?projects=aqueduct-murals
That's from the top of the building that's going to become Mana's urban arts museum. The roller on the right is by Kaws, who is from JC. He's now making a handsome living with his craft, w/ some of his pieces selling for 6 figures:

As with most things in life, packaging counts for a lot.
If the mural looks interesting or thought-provoking and is properly "framed" by a suitably-selected structure or hand-drawn paint lines, it is perceived to be closer to art. Generally speaking, an older structure always pairs better. If the mural looks like one giant signature, i.e. an ego tag, then it is often perceived as merit-free and thus closer to vandalism.

When potential residents look to move into a neighborhood, I know the one thing they always tell realtors is that they are looking for a neighborhood with a lot of graffiti, oops, I meant murals and street "art".

like most art, I like some better than others. one of the key benefits is that when a mural goes up, much of the tagging stops. tagging = vandalism...shitty graffiti is what I cannot stand.
