Jersey City neighborhood group opposing Port Authority freight movement planBy When the Port Authority meets with Jersey City residents at tomorrow's public hearing on the Cross Harbor Freight Program, members of the South Greenville Neighborhood Association will have a lot to say. "This is a very hot issue in Greenville, people are up in arms about this," said Martha Larkins, president of the association for Jersey City's southernmost neighborhood. "This will have a negative impact on Greenville by creating more noise and pollution." According to the Port Authority, the goal of the Cross Harbor Freight Program is to improve the movement of freight across the New York Harbor and the Hudson River. Since early November, the Port Authority has been asking residents of the metropolitan area for feedback on a draft study for the program, called the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS). In a 600-page document, the DEIS proposes 10 different options for reducing the environmental impact of freight movement, many of which involve concentrating the freight traffic on the New Jersey side in areas like Greenville and the Ironbound section of Newark. I see lots of kvetching, but nowhere do I see an actual citation of how frequently trains will run. As I said, we have trains run under the Tpk on the western border of HP all the time, frequently at night. You hear an eerie low squealing of the wheels and the occasional whistle. It's no big deal, it's not like they're blowing through at 60MPH, neither would they be in Greenville. People on Brunswick aren't hysterical, and their property values have been going nowhere but up.

Larkin and Vasil offered an alternative solution, requesting that the Port Authority look into basing operations in more sparsely populated areas like Perth Amboy or Linden, where the movement of freight will not affect as many people. Larkin added that the neighborhood association is also vying for support from the mayors office regarding this matter. When asked how the Port Authority can appease the residents of Greenville, Port Authority spokesman Steve Coleman wanted to remind the residents that an option has yet to be selected and encouraged those who have concerns to come to the public hearing and submit comments so their voices can be heard. Umm, trains run 24 hrs past Hamilton Park, it hasn't destroyed property values. At least this is the PA doing what it was created to do.

Tuesday, February 10th 4pm - 8 pm Bethune Center 140 MLK Drive The Port Authority has prepared a draft Environmental Impact Statement regarding different alternatives to transporting goods across the Hudson River. Although the idea is to reduce air pollution and truck traffic overall, all of the alternatives will result in more traffic, and air and noise pollution in Greenville. We need to go to the meeting on Tuesday Feb 10 to understand all about it and express our concerns. Some impacts include greatly increased rail traffic along the train tracks near Merritt Street and Country Village. Imagine trains running 24 hours a day every day of the week! The truck traffic will also increase possibly as much as 5300 diesel trucks a day. It could be unbearable. http://www.panynj.gov/about/cross-harbor.html
