btw, this is what the original post was referring to - Juan Ribbon Machine Shop, 144 First St. at Provost St.
and yes it is a historic landmark worthy building. many innovative designs and patents came out of this structure. Quote:

yes, for all practical purposes the district was finished off with the Toll Bros amendments to the redevelopment plan, before that the capitulation on 111, before that failure to redesignate the historic district. there was never been any meaningful persistence from anyone in government. the opposition to a tower has always been there.
and sure a museum etc would be wonderful, but even a Latitude 360 would be consistent with the PAD plan, preserve, reuse and provide access to. Quote:

if what was wanted was a tower on the powerhouse, then the past 15 years were wasted.

If its done right, it could be a real asset, but at this point, I have zero confidence that the guys that put a Fender Guitar on the smoke stakes of the Baltimore Power Plant have any clue on how to get it right. It we are going to abandon the original idea of saving, restoring and reusing the powerhouse as a center piece to the district, we should at least get other ideas and developers to look at the project. I feel the Baltimore guys used a bait and switch on us and the city. But the real question does anyone really care anymore about what happens at the powerhouse and in the district. I really don't think so. So we will get more towers and a fender guitar on the powerhouse and call it an "arts" district.

i sort of wish that jersey city or some developer would team up with the Tate museum and perhaps turn the powerhouse into the Tate Powerhouse or Tate on the Hudson or something

With the proposal to add 40+ stories to the Powerhouse building and the prospects of 124-136 Bay Street being proposed for demolition, its time we reflect on why historic preservation is important to our neighborhoods and city. This short Teds talk says it all.
