A Jersey City man was arrested yesterday and charged with Sunday's late night murder of 24-year-old Francisco Merced, authorities said.
Lamar Clark, 31, of Bostwick Avenue is charged with murder and one count of robbery, and is being held on a $350,000 cash only bail, Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Gene Rubino said. Merced was found partially inside a vehicle in front of 129 Sterling Ave. at 11:35 p.m., Rubino said, adding that police believe he was shot somewhere on his upper body while inside the vehicle. More

"Everyday folks are not shot down on the streets" Doubtless that is true, but is it the news media's role to be coming to such a conclusion outside of the Editorial Page?
And would there be more, not less, public outcry if the media did start drawing attention to that assertion? I can see the Black community, which is trying to build a narrative around the crisis of the loss of young, black men's lives that ties into the movement to eliminate easy access to guns, discovering that statement would work against the the movement to reduce gun violence. While we are all not equally at risk, we are all potentially at risk due to this violence.

I wish the JJ would tell it like it is. Everyday, local, law abiding citzens do not get shot down on the streets of GV. When I first moved here my neighbor told me something that was so true. He said normal people don't get shot here, if you are not part of the game you will be ok... All shootings since I have lived here has been of drug dealers, and users. Everyday folks are not shot down on the streets. More to the story here.
