Lost disc with Jersey City Medical Center patient data is finally found, hospital says

By Terrence T. McDonald | The Jersey Journal
September 30, 2014 at 5:44 PM

More than two months after a compact disc containing personal data of Jersey City Medical Center-Barnabas Health patients went missing, hospital officials say the disc was found and no data was compromised.
The CD, which was sent to an outside firm that reviews medical billing data back in June, was delivered earlier this month by UPS, JCMC spokesman Mark Rabson told The Jersey Journal.
The package was "still sealed in its original packaging," said Rabson, adding that the disc was destroyed.

Affected patients were notified in letters this week that their personal information ? including names, Social Security numbers and possibly birth dates ? never ended up in the wrong hands.

The JCMC potential "data breach" pales in comparison to what was announced today by Community Health Systems, a hospital network in 29 states. Their network was hacked and patient data (4.5 million records!) stolen.

Jersey City Medical Center recently publicized a Medicaid patient data breach that resulted from United Parcel Service (UPS) failing to deliver an unencrypted CD with patient data on it.

The CD, which held an unknown number Medicaid patients? names and some Social Security numbers from 2011, was supposed to arrive at Jersey City Medical Center on June 16 but never arrived. At this point, no one knows where the CD ended up. The center, which is part of Barnabas Health system, according to njbiz.com, will offer a year of free credit monitoring to affected patients.

?While UPS has no evidence that personal information has been made available to any unauthorized parties, or misused in any way, patients are being advised to be aware of any suspicious activity and to monitor their credit reports and financial accounts.?

Based on the center?s comments, it appears as though there was a breakdown in protocols to locate and find lost packages. Jersey City Medical Center added that it has since reviewed its incident prevention technology to avoid future instances of breaches, so the assumption is that will attempt to encrypt patient data going forward. ?We have followed up extensively with UPS regarding this incident, attempting to ensure that UPS has followed all of its internal procedures designed to locate missing packages.?

What a crock of sh%%t. My wife was in JCMC over that period and received a letter from JCMC.

JCMC lost your Name, Social Security number as well as a number of personal details that could be used in identity theft on that unencrypted CD. There's a huge risk of identity theft if that CD falls into the wrong hands. With your SSN, people could take out loans etc in your name, and you might be liable. The $25k insurance coverage offered by JCMC is pretty pathetic.

You can get 1 years free ID theft coverage if you were affected by going to www.firstwatchid.com and using the code Axxx Pxxx Kxxx (or whatever code JCMC sent you in their letter).

I'd recommend you take out Lifelock $1m coverage for about $100/year, if you were a victim of this.
