We have plenty of space and also endeavor to be of service to the Jewish community. So we're able to offer free services to anyone who wants to attend.

Come see our lovely sanctuary, hear the rabbi and the cantor and the blowing of the shofar.

You need to expand your imagination. Many temples WILL turn you away if you don't have a ticket to attend services during the high holidays. Simply put, it is a necessity for many temples: the tickets sold represent their capacity. If they have space for X people, they sell X amount of tickets. They can't let you in because they just don't have the space.

I just want to say that I have known plenty of synagogues who turn away people who cannot pay for tickets.

Beth El has a voluntary dues structure and also gets money from various fund raising activities and generous donors. However it has not been enough to keep up with the costs of the aging building.

We have large sanctuary and do not want to turn away anyone who wants to worship with us. If you can make a donation that's fine, and if you cannot afford to that's fine too. We would just like you to come and join us for the holiday.

The Temple has instituted a voluntary dues structure. Dues are vital, but rather than set a certain amount and work out exceptions for those who can't afford it, the Temple simply asks that people give what they can. I'm not the most familiar with temple finances but it seems to have worked ok so far.

There is no charge for high holiday services. Of course, a contribution is always welcomed.

Temples don't "pass the plate" every week or tithe. Membership fees and high holiday tickets are really the only income they get. And the membership fees at some of the temples in Hudson county are some of the lowest I have ever seen. I can't imagine any temple would turn anyone away who couldn't pay for a ticket. But it is nice that TBE has the finanvial flexibility to offer free holiday access.

Loved the clip from Curb Your Enthusiasm. Larry David should have come to Beth El, he wouldn't have had to worry about tickets. But we may not have a high enough star quotient for him.

Honest question - please forgive my ignorance, but in the headline of this topic you mentioned that the services are "free" - in all caps. I assume you mean no cost. Is there typically a charge to go to services?

No and yes. Synagogues have to charge dues to stay in business and provide semi-living wages for rabbis and cantors as well as cover costs for facilities, schools, classes, and other things.

For those people who do not belong to a synagogue but want to go to services (which are some of the holiest times of the year) they are often asked to offset the cost by making a donation. (Sadly, one of those costs has become security but more often it's utilities, staff, babysitting, food, etc.) It is often the case that the number of people at services rises exponentially during the High Holidays and many unaffiliated Jews suddenly find themselves in need of a place to be. It's extraordinarily generous of Temple Beth El to provide this.

Every time the Jewish high holiday season comes around, I am reminded of the *classic* Curb Your Enthusiasm episode about procuring tickets to attend services at the synagogue.
