Living on Washington St, I saw last Friday's accident first-hand and think JCMC did a superb job rescuing that woman and her son (as well as JCFD). One wonders how they would have fared if McCabe was in place. I don't even want to imagine.

A part-time Bayonne EMT has been charged with death by auto and driving while intoxicated after police say he slammed his car into a Union City man on a Bayonne street late last night, police said.

Jeremy Steinman, 22, of North Brunswick, a part-time paramedic at McCabe and other EMS companies, was driving north on Broadway at roughly 10 p.m. when he swerved into the southbound lane to pass a car, then swerved back into the northbound lane, police said.

He then struck a Jeep Cherokee as Heriberto Lithgow, 21, was getting into a back seat, police said. Lithgow, his sister, his mother and his mother?s boyfriend were leaving Bayonne after having dinner at a local restaurant, police said.

Police responding to Broadway and East 29th Street found Lithgow on the ground unconscious with severe injuries to his legs and head. Lithgow was taken to the Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead from his injuries at 1:05 a.m., Bayonne Police Capt. Walter Rogers said.

Steinman was additionally charged with a DWI in a school zone, reckless driving and failure to exhibit an insurance card, Rogers said.

Mickey McCabe, owner of McCabe Ambulance, said Steinman has been suspended and called the incident was a ?horrible situation.?

?My heart goes out to the family of the deceased,? McCabe said. ?We were the EMS crew at the scene and we did everything possible to save him.?

A man and his wife, who live near the accident scene said the crash sounded like and ?explosion.?

?A girl was screaming ?Help!?? said the woman, who declined to provide her name. ?The poor guy was laying on the ground with his leg twisted off and his head bleeding. The scene was something that would keep you up.?

Ian Andrews, 27, who lives in the same building, said he heard a ?loud crash and I called 9-1-1.?

Steinman was freed yesterday afternoon after his family posted $50,000 bail.

Steinman appeared before Superior Court Judge Paul DePascale, It was revealed in court that his blood-alcohol content was .14, nearly twice the legal limit of .08.

Wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and jeans, Steinman, was led handcuffed into the courtroom.

Steinman is a student at Middlesex County Community College and also volunteers for the North Brunswick Volunteers Squad, where his father Jeffery is the squad?s chief, said his attorney, Daniel Welsh. His mother is a retired police officer.

The crash is the second fatal accident involving a McCabe EMT in the past four months. On Dec. 12, Michael Burke was killed when he crashed on Avenue A near 7th Street. On Dec. 12, Steinman changed his Facebook profile picture in tribute to Burke.
