Gold's Gym on Communipaw. This is closer to 440. I've no idea of their rates, but I'm guessing they are in the similar mold of the Bally's and Retro.

This gym sucks, they are not professional and the music is Hot 97 at full volume. Not a good gym at all. Rates are about 40 a month with a-Hole staffers.

The mid-morning/day hours usually have most gyms fairly empty. If you were talking about the post 6pm time slots it would be a different story.

Cheap gyms...

Bally's on Bergen is about a block from JSQ. The area there is fine.

Blink Fitness is not open yet. It will be right around the block, about 20 steps away from Bally's.

Retro Fitness is fine. You just need a car to get there.

There is a Ballys Fitness in JSQ, a block from the path. They offer spin classes among others.

Wellll that's double the price of Retro, so not what I'd call cheap. Shame. I wouldn't mind a gym closer to me, but not at that price

It's cheap and not really just a boxing gym.

What're their monthly/yearly rates?

1 month @ $55, 6 months @ $280 or 1 year @ $490

Retro Fitness Hudson Mall is 14,200 sf. Tons of equipment. Lots of duplicates which is nice.

Hey Cory did you know there are plans to open up a Chuck E. Cheese in the old Jennifer Convertible space across from RF?

Nice to see most of the empty spaces filling up. With the Asian Market opening soon I think there is only one empty space left ..the old SWAG store.

Because machines are cheap and everyone has an extra 1,000 sq of space to accommodate all the new equipment.

Last time I am even aware of a crime other than shoplifting was when the newsstand was robbed like 4 years ago in a snatch and grab.

It's a very highly trafficked area with women and men working out at all times of day. You'll not have any issues. I've seen plenty of single women there and I've never seen anyone get harassed.

PS if you're good looking, please say hi!

I really wanted to join Retro but the traffic situation in the A.M. sucked so I chose planet fitness in Bayonne. I can drive in the morning, five minutes from where I live and 15 min by light rail. It's about a 4 min walk from the station.

The cost is 19 a month and you can use them all. So depending where I am I can work out in Bayonne, PA, Wall Street, Hoboken and Brooklyn. I have never had a safety issue. If the light rail went to Retro I would have really considered it, driving there in the morning is not pleasant.

Blink Fitness was going to open this month but their date had been pushed back to April. I know you can't use it now but thought you should at least know about it incase you are looking for another one later on.

If you're in DTJC/Pavonia/Paulus Hook, Club Metro on Washington Street is pretty cheap. No frills, but clean, the equipment works, and the area is safe.

HM is safe I can?t recall any serious crime problems happening in the parking lots. There is a constant flow of cars and people because of the mall and other stores. There is also a roving security patrol car. Most people park on the side of the mall near PC Richards/Lowes and walk over.

RF has a glass front so the entire gym can be seen from the inside of the mall. Really bright and clean. There are many people of all shapes and sizes working out. Small like you and fat..err..I mean large like myself. Also the people are from all walks of life no pompous a-holes in the bunch.

The only draw back may be the traffic on rt 440 it can be a bit much during morning and evening rush hours.

Go check it out, talk to the girls at the desk.

Cory would you agee that the HM is safe? I can't remember anything big happening there crime wise.

Yeah the Hudson Mall Retro Fitness is excellent.

2000 parking spots and a great mix of JC people.

does anyone have any info on the cheap gyms that are in the area here: retro fitness (west new york) or planet fitness (hoboken, bayonne, or north bergen)? i'm looking for an alternative to running outside in the winter, so basically just looking at using treadmills or ellipticals, and wanted to know how clean/safe any of those places seemed.
