In this case the Democrats are the first step in getting this referendum on the ballot, and they're refusing. If the Assembly passes it Christie will decide whether to sign it or not, and the Democrats would have the opportunity to vote to override if he chooses not to or not.

Odd, I thought we'd already had a referendum on this a while ago but I guess I'm misremembering.

Your title and post make it sound like this is some terrible thing Democrats are doing, but I don't see anything to indicate that Republicans are pushing for this. Could we maybe have a single thread on this site without it instantly turning int "arggghhh Democrats are always doing this" or "Republicans are the absolute worst!" Why won't NJ Democratic leaders allow a referendum vote on providing cash to preserve open space? Let the voters decide!
