A 34-year-old Jersey City man was shot in the groin during an attempted carjacking early Tuesday morning, police said.

A police officer was patrolling on Williams Avenue near West Side Avenue at 3:44 a.m. yesterday when he heard a single shot fired, reports state.

Police found the victim at the corner of Williams and West Side avenues with a gunshot wound to the groin, reports state.

The victim told police his 2010 BMW was double-parked on Williams Avenue when a man tried to carjack it and shot him, reports state. The victim's BMW was found on Williams Avenue and it was apparent that the car had crashed into three other vehicles, reports state.

Police searched the area and found a .40-caliber shell casing underneath a 2008 Honda Odyssey, reports state. The police report did not say if the victim crashed the car after he was shot or if the carjacker crashed the car.

The victim was taken to the Jersey City Medical Center and treated for his injuries, reports said.

A Jersey City K-9 unit responded to the scene, but were unable to find any weapons, reports state.
