That may be Faddis, but thats not really the NJCU big band... the guy leading the band in that picture is as far as possible from actual jazz majors as possible.

Bumping this up...

"... waterfront free jazz concert from 6 to 8 p.m, 20 Sept.

The concert, at Exchange Place, will be the first in a series of free jazz concerts at the J. Owen Grundy Pier. It will feature trumpeter Jon Faddis and the NJCU Alumni Jazz Big Band."

Jon Faddis is worth the trip.

Jon Faddis is the real deal and one of the best horn players in the business.

Damn straight he is! I believe he was touring with Lionel Hampton at 18. And he's a protege of John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie. I once saw him send Wynton Marsalis to the showers in a jam session.

Jon Faddis is the real deal and one of the best horn players in the business. NJCU jazz band has always been top notch. Should be pretty awesome.

NJCU to formally inaugurate new president, followed by campus bash and free waterfront jazz concert

By The Jersey Journal
September 18, 2013 at 6:27 PM

New Jersey City University will fete its new president, Sue Henderson, at a day-long inauguration ceremony and celebration this Friday.

Henderson, who was appointed last June as the university's first female president, will be formally inaugurated at 10 a.m. at the Margaret Williams Theatre of Hepburn Hall, following a half-hour academic procession.

Mohammad H. Qayoumi, president of San Jose State University, will deliver the keynote address on ?Reinventing Higher Education: A Call to Action.?

Following the ceremony, there will be a campus-wide reception from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., then an academic panel at the Michael B. Gilligan Student Union from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

At 2:30 p.m., Anthony Surratt, a university associate director, will lead a walking tour of NJCU followed by an off-campus tour led by professor Timothy White that will take participants from the local light rail stop to the waterfront for the free jazz concert from 6 to 8 p.m.

The concert, at Exchange Place, will be the first in a series of free jazz concerts at the J. Owen Grundy Pier. It will feature trumpeter Jon Faddis and the NJCU Alumni Jazz Big Band.

Henderson assumed the presidency on Aug. 6, 2012. She previously served as COO and a vice president at Queens College.

She holds a Ph.D. in higher education from the Institute of Higher Education at the University of Georgia, as well as undergraduate and master's degrees in math education from Georgia State University.

The inauguration excitement will continue beyond Friday.

Henderson will be feted with a monthlong series of programs and cultural events intended to showcase NJCU?s deep roots in the Jersey City community, its 84-year tradition of academic excellence, its broadly diverse campus community, and its motto: "Enter to learn, exit to serve."

Events will include: several concerts on campus; student and faculty art exhibitions; panel discussions; a students? day of service in the community at Audubon Park and Liberty State Park; sports events; a walking tour of Liberty Island and the Statue of Liberty; and several events organized by NJCU Greek organizations and campus clubs.
