I am not a teacher, but I wholeheartedly agree with linky's assertion below. I directly trace my professional success and career development to my "fluency" in math and numbers. It was drilled into me early on by a handful of very dedicated teachers and I know it made a huge difference in my life. Any teacher that advocates the use of a calculator in place of actual brain power is doing your kid a disservice.

I'm a schoolteacher (taught math basic skills for many years) and I do recommend KUMON for computation and number sense. It's a big pain and the kids hate it, but it really develops discipline, focus, and they will be really, really fluent in computation. For basic arithmetic, it's wonderful. I did not do the reading as my kids did not need it. btw: Don't listen to educators who tell you that kids don't need to be fluent in arithmetic because they have calculators. It's nonsense.

I am thinking of enrolling my kids in the 101 Discoveries math program. Does anyone have experience with this? I'm also open to other after school programs as well.
