This week's clinics are in addition to the usual spring clinics.

Jersey City's Dept. of Health and Human Services is planning additional clinics for the coming months. The City is committed to doing animal care in every part of Jersey City.

Pitbulls and Yorkies, Shih Tzus and Shepherds, and all kinds of lovely kitties came by today for their shots, licenses and to schedule low-cost spay/neuter surgeries.

WEDNESDAY 2-7pm at City Hall

THURSDAY 2-7pm at Pershing Field

I believe the current wellness clinics this week will finish off an ASPCA grant for 2013. The City would have to apply for another one for next year if it has not already done so.

Jersey City will provide 450 free rabies vaccinations for dogs and cats with the help of the ASPCA, as part of its inaugural Pet Wellness Week this week, city officials announced.
?Jersey City residents care about their pets and know that healthy pets make a great contribution to the quality of life in Jersey City,? Mayor Steve Fulop said. ?Pet Wellness Week is one of our initiatives to help people take good care of their companion animals.?

The city will provide vaccinations at three locations this week, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.:

-- the Mary McLeod Bethune Center at 140 Martin Luther King Drive on Tuesday, Oct. 15;

-- at City Hall at 280 Grove St., on Wednesday;

-- at Pershing Field, 210 Central Ave., on Thursday.

All dogs receiving free rabies vaccinations must get a new license or renew the current license. In addition to free rabies vaccinations for the first 150 dogs and cats at each location, on-site dog licensing will be available for $8 for spayed/neutered dogs and $12 for unaltered pets, city spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill said.
Only checks or money orders will be accepted.

People for Animals will offer discounted pet services: microchipping for pet identification, basic veterinary treatments, and scheduling of low-cost spay and neuter procedures off-site.

All participants will be enrolled in the Responsible Pet Owner program, which gives discounts to many pet-related businesses in Jersey City.

Great job Pinky!

Especially given the wacky weather conditions yesterday. You took good care of some pretty challenging beasts, and of course, you also tended to the pets.

The next stop is Saturday, 05/04 at The Bethune Center 140 MLK Drive (Parking lot.)

Some tips for going to these clinics:

Bring water for your pet.

Do not bring food for your dog. Please feed him or her before coming to the clinic.

All cats must be in a carrier that has ventilation.

If you have more than one pet, bring along another person. For example, if you have to license your dog and your cat needs shots, if you are by yourself you will have to wait to get the dog licensed before moving on to the wellness shots.

Understand that some pets need extra attention by the vet, which may increase your waiting time. Be patient.

If you are licensing for the first time, do not bring every vet record?only the last rabies shot information and proof of spay or neuter if applicable. It will make the process go much faster.

If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please feel free to email me at pinkowitzr@jcnj.org or call 201-547-5507.

I attended this last weekend, and got there about 11:30 in the morning and it was a line two blocks long. I left and came back around 2 PM and breezed right through.

This was a very organized event and encourage all pet owners to attend. If the next one is anything like the one at MLK be patient lots of people show up, and bring an umbrella this weekend.

You need to bring a check or money order for the license, and a credit card or cash for the shots.

I made the mistake of not bringing my checkbook.

No Mr. Mouse, they do not. You can bring Hello Kitty to get all the needed shots (for free) and other services offered by People For Animals.

It's a good event.

If I were a Mouse, I would want all cats to be registered, with strict limits as to the number of teeth and claws that could be carried (zero would be about the right number). And no concealed cats, ever!

But Jersey City does not require cat licensing.

+1 on the well-earned kudos. Brought my guy back to renew his license, as well as a kitty I rescued off the streets, and everything was smoother and faster than last year. Great city program, and I am very grateful for this.

My only quibble, and it is rather minor, is that the two first tables (one to review paperwork and payment, the other to take the payment and write out receipts) were a bit slow and could have been combined. Splitting the tables seems inefficient.

The vets on hand were great (as always) and it was all very smooth. THANK YOU.

Went last weekend to City Hall for this. It was much better than last year I thought (but I had the 3 year license - which is totally worth it). It is a great program overall, and I'm glad I live in Jersey City for this.

Going again this Sunday to Pershing Field for the other animal in the house.

Yes, I'd also like to say *Thank You* for organizing this event. I can understand the post about the sidewalk and agree that the barricades can be moved inward. However, all in all it was helpful and well organized. Thanks again.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Very well done. I don't mind the wait, but this year it was even shorter.

I love these clinics. They are something the City does well.

Point taken and we will try and adjust the barricades next year. We had signs on the other side of Montgomery and Grove "side walk closed in front of City Hall from Montgomery to Mercer 9am to 4pm", it may have been removed.

Thanks for letting us know...and I seriously mean it. Feedback good and bad, allows us to improve each year.

Glad you all are doing this - but it would be nice if you did not take up the entire side walk in front of City Hall. You are making it dangerous for people to walk in that area. Please pull the police barricade back - there will still be plenty of room for you. Thanks

Thank you for your support of Jersey City's Pet Owner's Day clinics. Today, we sent out the email blast with the renewal application. For those not on our email list, you should receive the applications by mail towards the end of next week.

Last year, we were able to offer free wellness shots along with the free rabies shots for the first time. The wellness shots, known as Da2PP (for dogs) and FVRCP (for cats), are crucial to stop the spread of highly contagious and deadly diseases. The cost to run these clinics is very high, and last year 65% of the cost was funded by grants we applied for and won. We have some more grants in the works, and when awarded, we can introduce more clinics at other locations?possibly in the fall and during the course of the year for new pet owners or newly acquired four-legged family members. We learned from last year that the clinics must be held in cooler weather and so, to avoid unexpected heat waves, we are concluding them in mid-May. The eight back-to-back clinics are physically exhausting to do, and we became a bit burnt-out and sunburned by the time we held the final clinic at City Hall.

This year we are holding fewer clinics, but adding more hours to each clinic and increasing the number of staff to issue licenses, rabies certificates and assist our veterinarians. Those who are either renewing or licensing for the first time will need a bit more attention from the licensing team, so either Carmen or I will be on the front lines to make sure the three-year license holders do not wait on the licensing/rabies shot lines and can go right in for the wellness shots or other low-cost services. Cats will also be moved out of the dog licensing lines and will go directly in for the shots. This should alleviate some of the issues we had last year.

The 2013 season is going to be exciting and we will soon release the information to our pet community that we think you are going to love?stay turned!

Information about Dog Licensing:

The new licensing calendar becomes effective on May 1, 2013 and will require dog owners to renew their pup's tags either once every year or every three years, depending on the licensing schedule they choose.

For more information on the new program, and the requirements and fees involved to license your dog, read more here

I took my dog to the last clinic held last year (in Arlington Park) and even though it was a little disorganized (there was some confusion regarding the two lines: one for license paperwork, the other for the shots) I think it was a very nice event. It brought together people from the neighborhood on a beautiful summer day, along with their pets, and the service being provided (FREE OF CHARGE!) was just great. And, as a result of the experience, I have become a supporter of People For Animals (PFA) and have encouraged other friends and acquaintances to use their services in the Hillside location. From the flyer posted below, it seems like Arlington Park is not getting a clinic this year. Hopefully one will be added later.

To bloodtv: not sure why you would be told that paperwork would be sent through the mail, when it was given to each person right after shots were applied. Heck, they even took the time to affix the label from the vaccine vessel to the paperwork, to ensure you would have the actual batch information as part of your paperwork!

Also, for any owner planning to do this, PLAN AHEAD. Bring a bottle of water and some food, as you may be in line for a while and your pet may need some sustenance.

Other than that, kudos all around. I have to say that this is a GREAT city program/service. I hope they keep it going forever.

One year later and I'm still waiting for my cat's license tag to come in the mail. I was so glad to see that JC did this...but seeing how badly it was managed...and how I did not get any proof of vaccinations (I was told it would be sent in the mail) it was a huge time-waster. And hours in line and my cat became sick. I would not recommend it.

bloodtv, I'm surprised to read that you paid for a cat license since cats do not have to be licensed in Jersey City. The rabies shots and any other shots for cats were done at a table designated for cats and I will be happy to get in touch with People for Animals to get a copy of your shot records that were given to each person at the time of the shots. The reason we are doing this clinics so early is to avoid any heat waves like the ones that happened last year. We had over 1400 dogs and 480 cats at last year?s clinics and gave a total of 3033 vaccinations. Please feel free to contact my office with the location of the clinic you attended. 201-547-5507

What sickness did your cat contract?

Odd you did not get a record of vaccination at the time your cat was vaccinated. But regardless, the vaccination is important and protects against distemper, calic virus and rhinotracheitis. If your cat was a kitten it needed three shots about 2 or so weeks apart to gain full immunity.

This program is a valuable service for cats and dogs alike and to pet owners who do not have the discretionary money to pay a vet office visit ($55-$60) plus the cost of the shot ($30 - $40).

The City should be commended for taking proactive steps in protecting the health of the pets in our community.
