Just to chime in for the DIY crowd, you don't need to buy/rent a sprayer, but it will save time over a roller. Cup guns, airless sprayers, power rollers, etc. are all varieties.

You clean up the old varnish/paint/crud with something like http://www.homedepot.com/p/Citristrip ... 1T/100208204#.UVGJYBzqmVM

Stain it or paint it http://www.homedepot.com/p/BEHR-Premi ... 01/100177533#.UVGJChzqmVM

And then waterproof it. Most stains also have a waterproofer, careful not to to use a waterproofer on top of a stain with one in it. You'll get a mess of goop because the coating from the all-in-one will prevent the waterproofer from sticking properly. http://www.homedepot.com/p/BEHR-1-Gal ... 01/202301645#.UVGKcRzqmVM

I did this once and it took way longer than I wanted. I'd be happy to get a pro to do it for me and consider it the cost of buying a weekend back. Weekends are pretty precious these days.

Thanks for the Spar Varnish tip though; I'll look into that as an option.

Sure you don't want to just have it as a DIY type project? A small pressure washer set at about 1000 psi and you could knock it out in a day.

As for staining: Stain will break down in UV light. You will need to coat the deck in something like a marine grade spar varnish. Though the manufacturers of the varnish don't recommend it for decks. Still, it is what I would use as regular polyurethane has gone to hell in durability since the EPA regulated away a lot of its former components.

Has anyone had experience with a local service provider that can clean a pressure treated wood deck and then apply a stain to protect it? I live in downtown JC.

Thank in advance,

Jim
