Aren't some of the buildings on Fairmont now condo? I would think the only thing to stop section 8 there is for more businesses to open up and people to call out to city hall o the slum lords.

A 19-year-old Jersey City man was fatally shot outside a Bergen Avenue apartment building Saturday evening, the 15th murder in Hudson County this year.
Caprice Williams, 19, died after being shot multiple times in the chest, back and leg, Assistant Prosecutor Gene Rubino said. Jersey City police were called to Bergen Avenue after a report of shots fired at 7:29 p.m. They found Williams lying on the sidewalk between Jewett and Kensington avenues, officials said. Williams was transported by ambulance to the Jersey City Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 7:56 p.m., Rubino said. Homicide Unit detectives are interviewing witnesses, but no motive has been established, Rubino said. An autopsy being conducted by the Regional Medical Examiner's Office will determine the exact cause and manner of death, and the number of bullets that struck Wil??liams, he said. Local residents said they heard between three and five bullets ring out Saturday. A 13-year-old girl, who lives in the apartment building in front of which Williams was found, said she heard four shots ring out and when she went outside, she saw him shaking with his eyes open. John Schmalberger, 54, a retired Hudson County police officer who lives around the corner on Kensington Avenue, said he heard three shots Saturday evening and didn't dare go outside. "There's drugs, prostitution and guns," Schmalberger said yesterday about the neighborhood. The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Unit and Jersey City Police Department are investigating the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Unit at (201) 915-1345.JJ

And the landlord gets a yearly stipend to "renovate" the place. I knew of a place on NY Ave. up in the Heights it was an apartment building also owned by a slumlord where there was drug dealing going on. The super was in on it along with one of the tenants. They would hide the drug drop off in the walls of the halls. The dealer would threaten the neighborhood to keep their mouths shut. Eventually after cpnstant calls to the police they got the mayor and other powers that be in a meeting and abolished the drug problem.

Those buildings are rent controlled. The only way you can get around it is to rent to Section 8. With Section 8 you get well above market rates. The tenant doesn't care what it costs because she could be paying as little as $90 a month while the taxpayer picks up the tab. The situation with those apartments will get interesting when the Federal govt. finally defaults and can no longer give money away. What will those people do when the Section 8 vouchers stop coming and the EBT cards no longer work?

Most of those buildings are owned by Hasidic slum lords who are more concerned about collecting section 8 rent from single moms at a rate of $1,800 a month. They care nothing about the buildings, they are basically pre-war crack houses. Its a real shame because they are nice buildings.

I have a property on Belmont, not far from where this guy met his maker. Lots and lots of drug dealing and general thuggish behavior from the Section 8 Apartments on Bergen ave.
I lost a tenant (he moved.. not death) due to shootings and the harassment of the more productive members of the neighborhood. The sad thing is those larger apartments building are actually very nice buildings. They were built during the economic boom times of 1923 - 1929. It was a fashionable area for the yuppies of the day to move to. You got a nice apartment near NYC.
