PSE&G have been putting up those eyesore solar panels across the city. They should pick up the tab for the cemetery.

Those two are living rent free in that building... sounds like they haven't been paying the bill for quite a while.

The power has been shut off at the Jersey City & Harsimus Cemetery, leaving the six-acre Newark Avenue graveyard in total darkness for the last three days and its volunteer operators ?in big trouble,? according to a letter sent to supporters yesterday.
The power outage doesn?t just affect the cemetery plots. Two veterans who live in the graveyard?s gatekeeper house and provide 24/7 security have also had to live for the last three days without power. Eileen Markenstein, the board?s president, sent out the letter seeking help in drumming up $1,400 to restore power and help the cemetery ?make it though these next few weeks,? the letter reads. ?We are in big trouble today,? Markenstein writes. The historic cemetery opened in 1829 on the Newark Avenue slopes that were home to Revolutionary War skirmishes and an ammunition bunker in the War of 1812. The graveyard is the resting place for thousands of war veterans. The cemetery fell into disrepair and was essentially abandoned in 2008 after its caretakers had all either died or moved away. Markenstein and six other new members took over the board that year, and pledged to take care of the property. Markenstein said she thought the cemetery had until April 17 to pay the overdue bill, but PSE&G shut off the power three days ago. ?We have six acres here, and we have these big halogen security lights that are on every night just to secure the night and make sure there's no trouble here,? she said. ?So it really adds up.? Markenstein told The Jersey Journal that PSE&G has agreed to restore power ?hopefully tonight,? and asked that the $1,400 bill be paid in full by Monday. Mayor Jerramiah Healy, whose office interceded on Markenstein?s behalf to get the power restored, has pledged to make a donation. Markenstein urged anyone who wished to donate to visit www.jerseycitycemetery.org, or call her for more details at (201) 707-0738.3 days of darkness.
