The article clearly states "cash and property". It could have been $100 cash, $500 watch and $400 phone for all we know.
The area is not particularly known as being a "hot" spot. It's close to Franklin/Palisade, which years ago was pretty bad with drug deals, although it's been toned down in recent years as far as I can tell.

Remarkable that this 'random single-out' guy was carrying $1000 in cash walking around at midnight in that area.
 Sounds more like a drug deal that went bad

A Jersey City man was left bloody after an assault by five men while robbing him of more than $1,000 in cash and property Wednesday night, officials said yesterday.
Officers responding to Bowers Street and Sherman Avenue at 11:58 p.m. found the 36-year-old Sherman Avenue man bleeding from his face, reports said. He told cops that a white SUV pulled up and four or five men dressed in black and wearing baseball caps jumped out, reports said. One of the men, he said, trained a gun and flashlight on him while the others roughed him up and robbed him, reports said.
