People are being pretty tough on this old guy -- don't you have parents or grandparents? To be honest, he might not even have known that there was a train at street level down here. Perhaps a flashing sign saying train coming might be better than red lights -- where you might not see a fast silent train. Sure he was in the wrong - but what the heck.

A 72-year-old Hoboken man was seriously injured when the sport utility vehicle he was driving collided with a Light Rail train on Sixth Street in Downtown Jersey City yesterday morning, authorities said.

The man, who has not been identified, was treated at the Jersey City Medical Center for head lacerations and multiple fractures to his left arm, JCMC spokesman Mark Rabson said, adding that the man was semiconscious when EMTs arrived at the scene.

Last night, the man was in stable condition after receiving a number of stitches and undergoing tests, Rabson said.

Driving a black SUV, the man was attempting to cross Sixth Street near Washington Boulevard at about 11:30 a.m. when the accident occurred. He was the only person in the SUV, said Jersey City fire officials, who noted firefighters had to extricate him from the SUV.

Jersey City Fire Director Armando Roman said the driver tried to beat the traffic signal light at the rail crossing and the train broadsided him, crushing the doors on the driver's side.

The train was traveling at 10 miles per hour at impact, NJ Transit spokeswoman Courtney Carroll said.

No summonses were issued and NJ Transit police are still investigating the accident, Carroll said. One passenger on the Light Rail train reported suffering back pain in the accident.

Service between Harsimus Cove and Newport-Pavonia was suspended for about 30 minutes, Carroll said.
