Jersey City Councilman Mariano Vega charged in massive NJ corruption probe resigns
Published: Monday, September 13, 2010, 1:09 PM Updated: Monday, September 13, 2010, 1:11 PM The Jersey Journal The Jersey Journal Jersey City Councilman Mariano Vega, one of the 46 people arrested in last summer's massive New Jersey corruption sting, resigned his seat today. The resignation comes just one business day after the city would have been required to hold a special election in November to fill the remainder of his term. Instead, the council will now have the opportunity to appoint someone to the at-large spot. Council President Peter Brennan said Vega resigned in an e-mail sent this morning. Vega wrote that his resignation would be affective at 5 p.m. today, the start of the council's caucus meeting. Brennan said he didn't speak to Vega about the resignation yet, but that Vega mentioned an effort by residents to recall him and several other council members. When Vega was arrested, he was council president. He refused to resign, saying he is innocent of the charges, but eventually gave up the presidency. There were public protests calling for his resignation. Vega, who served as director of the Hudson County Department of Parks, Engineering and Planning, was suspended from that job at the time of his arrest last year. Vega pleaded innocent in January; his trial is scheduled for October. Vega is charged with accepting $30,000 from a purported developer who turned out to be government informant Solomon Dwek. He is further charged with lying to the FBI about knowing Dwek. He is accused of accepting the money in exchange for promising to help Dwek secure development approvals. Vega has missed a number of council caucuses and meetings in recent weeks. Brennan said he recently attended his daughter's wedding. Vega could not immediately be reached for comment.
