Just an update... the problem was with the sewer main and the city came and vacuumed it out and the overflow was resolved... except for the sewage residue that I now have to clean up. I would be happy to know how anyone else has dealt with that. Did you try to get compensated by the city? Did you hire a firm to do the cleanup? I will probably have to replace some flooring at least.

Call city hall and tell them you need to file a claim. Not sure who you need to talk to. There is no guarantee that this will be approved but you can get the form, take the pictures, etc. I've gotten a claim approved for a flat tire I got on a city street due to potholes. The city is obligated to maintain their infrastructure, and when they don't they have to pay for the damage caused.

As to getting compensation for damages from JC --
good luck.
What you might consider doing is joining the
Yahoo Group "JCSOS" that was formed a while
back to deal with the huge flooding and sewer backup
problems that we have here..
There are some very well informed folks who
belong to that group, and it would not hurt for
you to write up your story and submit it to the
group and ask for advice.

I'm glad you got cleaned up.
p.s. let councilman Fulop's
office know that you have damage, and see if they have
anything to add.

I could smell the sewers this evening near 2nd & Erie. Nasty.

Earlier this afternoon, workers had dug a huge hole in the street on 3rd right outside of C-Town. Not sure if that had anything to do with it.

There was a municipal truck out this morning on 5th and Jersey. They where opening up the sewer drains and dredging them; scooping out piles of muck. They were heading south on Jersey Avenue after that.

I am on the other end of Third, up near Erie.
So far, knock on wood, no big problem; but i must
say that the storm drains/sewers on all the corners of
jersey and erie, all the way from Hamilton to VanVorst, smell just terrible -- which generally
indicates that the sewer lines are getting clogged
and need to be vacuumed by the city.

Give the city as many calls as it takes to get
them to come to you.

There is a not-so-funny story that has gone
around for years regarding our civil war
era sewers. It goes something like:
when you get off the path train, how do
you know you are in downtown jersey city?
answer: when you smell the shit, you
know you are at grove st..

Keep after the city about this. If there is no
response, call Councilman Fulop's office.

Anyone else have sewer coming into their house in the vicinity of 3rd Street @ Jersey? I'm wondering if the problem we're having (sewer in the basement!) is with our sewer hookup or with the sewer main. Anyone else having issues the past few days???
