Woman shot in back outside Jersey City bar; two arrests
By Charles Hack/The Jersey Journal
April 04, 2010, 7:42PM

A Newark woman was shot in the back in the Jersey City Heights early Saturday and two men were arrested after speeding away from the scene.

But the two men were not charged with the shooting, according to police reports.

A shooting victim, who didn't realize she was shot until she reached home in Newark, later walked into the Jersey City Medical Center for treatment.

Police on patrol noticed a large crowd gathered in front of a restaurant at 594 Palisade Ave. near Congress Street at 2:41 a.m. and then heard up to five gunshots coming from the intersection, reports said.

The crowd scattered when gunfire erupted. Cops didn't see any victims, but found three spent .25 caliber shell casings near the scene, police said.

Other police arriving spotted a red 1998 Honda Civic speeding away on Ogden Street toward Congress Street.

Police pursued the Honda, which made several turns sometimes driving against the flow of traffic until they were able to pull in front of the car at New York Avenue at Hutton Street.

Police noticed a small holster next to the passenger seat and police later recovered a small handgun and magazine from North Street near Webster Avenue.

Police charged the driver Martin Anico of Oakland Avenue, 23, in Jersey City, for eluding police. He was also given tickets for careless driving, driving the wrong way, and driving with an open alcoholic container in the car.

Helio Resto, 25, of Bergenline Avenue in Jersey City was arrested on outstanding warrants.

Two other men in the car were released.

Then at 5:06 a.m. police were notified a 36-year-old woman with gunshot wound walked into the Jersey City Medical Center.

The woman said she was standing in front of Caribbean Nights Bar at 594 Palisade Ave. when a fight stated between two unknown individuals.

She told police that she heard a gunshot but did not realize she was shot until she arrived home on Ferry Street in Newark, reports said.
