We have always had national standards in public education and well we should. There are certain things that every American child should know--period. This makes a federal standard very useful and entirely appropriate. It is not "cookie cutter." It is not "forcing one person's world view on complete strangers." It is simply ensuring that our education system turns out children ready, able and worthy of being functioning members of society. Public school was founded with a mission to provide the best and equal education, regardless of economic status.
Every child should graduate learning physics, history, calculus, English composition and literature and most importantly, critical thinking and civics. We've fallen short of that goal, and it is certainly a shame. But hopefully we will be back on track.

Anyone know what happens to the health insurance of employees of a charter school that gets shut down (e.g., CREATE)?
Since there is no longer an employer, there would not be a plan to continue under COBRA, I'd think. But maybe a district plan is available, or something? Anyone have constructive thoughts on the topic? Would be appreciated. (and yes, the school admins are probably the best source to ask, but maybe someone on this board knows?)

We should unite well because it worked. It was something that worked and gave us national pride.
Plus I believe(my personal belief) that in an American school. Children should be learning about American History and achievements/culture. They should also reach a certain level or the three Rs.

As for the USSR, it's not surprising that as our education system has become more and more centralized, our results have deteriorated. Why do we need to unite against anyone?

I hate to disagree, but every child by the time they leave the 12th grade should've learned certain things. Information that every American child should know. That would be considered cookie cutter. Sadly its the parents then the teachers. So many parents think its 100% on the teachers to make sure their children learn.
Oh also the answer is not charter schools, but to fix the American way. Education dropped when the Cold War ended. Our goal was to be better then the USSR at everything. Now we unite against no one, but ourselves it seems.

National school standards are completely ridiculous. One size fits all, cookie cutter systems don't work.

thanks, I guess it means that there are no easy answers, while at the same time there are many answers ....

Below is a link to slate's review of Diane Ravitch's new book. Ravitch is one of the top education scholars in the country, and has been a leading proponent of reform.
She's put the brakes on that recently, however, because it appears that many of the reforms that have been advocated over the past couple of decades have had at best mixed results. Specifically she's talking about charter schools and the testing mandated by No Child Left behind. Interesting reading for those of us who are concerned about the state of the Jersey City school system. http://www.slate.com/id/2247300
