Two Jersey City teenage girls are shot amid gunfire along Old Bergen Road

Two Jersey City teenage girls were shot early Saturday as gunfire erupted along Old Bergen Road, police said.

A 15-year-old Van Nostrand Avenue resident shot in the back was listed in stable condition yesterday after undergoing an emergency operation at the Jersey City Medical Center, officials said.

Grazed by a bullet on the right side of her stomach, a 16-year-old Virginia Avenue girl was also listed in stable condition yesterday.

The girls told police they were part of a group of girls who left a party in the recreation room at the Curries Woods public housing complex and were walking along Old Bergen Road near Pearsall Avenue at about 12:15 a.m., reports said.

A large group of boys were behind them, they said.

The 15-year-old, who didn't immediately realize she had been shot, told cops both groups started running when they heard shots ring out, reports said.

The 16-year-old only realized she had been shot when she stopped to help the 15-year-old, reports said.

Police searched the area and found several shell casings.

One bullet entered the south wall of a house on Old Bergen Road and exited the north wall, while another bullet went through the rear window of a Honda CRV parked on the street, reports said.

When cops arrived at the scene they saw about 10 juveniles running. They stopped them and searched them, but then let them go, reports said.

Police dogs led cops to search two other men at Linden and Ocean avenues, but they too were released without charges, reports said.

Anyone with information about this shooting is asked to call the police tipline at (201) 547-JAIL.
