Rock mistaken for gunshot in Jersey City park

The windshield of a bus was smashed this morning in a freak accident in Lincoln Park in Jersey City that brought a response from police and helicopters from the New York media, according to a spokesman for the Hudson County Sheriff.

Two workmen at the park were clearing brush when the weed whacker they were using picked up a large rock and hurled it through the windshield of the bus, which was passing through the park on its way back to New York City, according to Robert Knapp, a spokesman for the sheriff?s office.

The bus, owned by Paulie Coach of New York, was occupied only by the driver, who was not injured, Knapp said.

He said people in the Lincoln Park neighborhood heard the sound and reported they heard gunshots in the park, giving police a description of a suspect. The report brought a response from police and helicopters from the New York media.

"It?s untrue," said Knapp. "There was no gunshot."
