View Larger Map Calling cops 'pigs' leads to trouble Thursday, October 01, 2009 By MICHAELANGELO CONTE JOURNAL STAFF WRITER A Jersey City man who was spitting toward cops and calling them by the Spanish word for "pigs" was arrested after a short chase Tuesday night, officials said. Alexel R. Cotto Jr., of Fifth Street in Jersey City, was arrested at about 10:30 p.m. at Fourth Street and Marin Boulevard and charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, and obstruction of a government function, reports said. The officers were writing tickets at the intersection, which is known for fights and drug trafficking, when a group of about six males began yelling "Puercos," reports said. The officers asked the men why they were calling them pigs and were told it was due to past experiences with police, reports said. The cops told the men to keep their hands in sight but Cotto refused, saying "he didn't have to do anything we (the cops) told him to do," reports said. Believing Cotto might have a weapon, the officers grabbed for his hands, but Cotto pushed away and took off running, only to be tackled and captured a short distance away, reports said. Cotto didn't have a weapon.
