Woman hit crossing Boulevard

A Chicago woman was critically injured last night when she was struck by a pickup truck at the intersection of Kennedy Boulevard and Newark Avenue in Jersey City.

The 25-year-old woman was crossing Kennedy Boulevard at 8:18 p.m. when Deval Trivedi, 22, of Summit Avenue in Jersey City, struck her while making a left hand turn from Newark Avenue, the police report said.

The woman was brought to the Jersey City Medical Center last night. The extent of her injuries could not be determined at press time.

"I just heard a noise," said John Hamman, who said he witnessed the aftermath of the accident. "The guy with the girl was screaming, 'Stop, stop!'

"The driver stopped, then started again, dragging the woman, then stopped again. He jumped out of the car and someone was beating him, and then he ran."

Jersey City police spokesman Lt. Edgar Martinez said those details were not in the police report and he could not confirm the witness' account. No charges were filed against the driver.

A woman was struck by a pickup truck at Kennedy Boulevard and Newark Avenue in Jersey City this evening and she suffered possible life-threatening injuries, police said.

When a crowd gathered, the driver of the pickup drove away from the scene, but he called police and reported the incident, said Police Lt. Edgar Martinez.

The woman has been taken to the Jersey City Medical Center and police are investigating, he said.
