There is a lot of information about these buses on this website:

http://www.jerseyjitneys.info/

There seem to be routes on Boulevard East, Bergenline, Newark Ave, Kennedy, to Paterson, and to Fort Lee.

There's also a map

Thank You! This explains a bunch. It is funny, I couldn't find any info on the web (or didn't know where to look). Does anyone have any time estimate on how long it takes to do the route like Palisades close to New York Avenue, down to Grove Path station?

all the dollar vans i've taken that run on JFK and say 'journal square' actually drop you off inside the station where the buses leave you. i dont know about any of the other routes though.

When they say "Journal Square", they actually mean a block away...the way the streets are set up around there would make it really hard for them to actually take you to Journal Square, so you get off a block to the side of it. You pay when you get off. Most of the drivers are fine (especially during the day), but at times you can get a scary ride. I ride them all the time, though. Very convenient.

what jcnj said. if its rainy or late night ask the driver if he is going downtown. when its late and there arent any passengers the drivers will kick you off at pavonia/summit. they're byob friendly for those long drives up to north hudson haha.

lol...You don't buy tickets you just get on the bus and pay when you get off unless they tell you to pay first but they mostly just do that when you get on at Newport.

The path the bus takes from Newport is down Marin to Newark ave, when it gets up the hill it goes down Pavonia until Summit and Pavonia (Journal Square). The it goes north on Summit to Newark ave again making a right heading back the same direction it came until Palisade, it goes up Palisade to Washington Park then turns onto New York ave in Union City. It stays on this street until 48th and turns on Bergenline and stay on Bergenline until it leaves Hudson County to Bergen County and Bergenline's name changes to Anderson ave. From here it might keep going to either A&P in Fairview or might go to GW Bridge in Fort Lee depending on the driver you get.

the other route is: JSQ all the way up JFK blvd and up to 32nd street in union city, then it turns right and goes into NYC (stops at 42nd street port authority).

there are also other routes that go all the way up to north bergen, but i think those come on palisade... not sure. if youre going into nyc, i believe the fare is $2 and change. they are posted on the inside walls when you walk into the vans

Pay $1.25 on your way out. If you need change, you can tell him ahead of time to give the guy a chance to make the change so he's and everyone else aren't kept waiting.

Shout "Next stop" or "Proxima" when you want to get off.

Route is as you say:

Down Palisade.
Newark Ave.
Summit Ave (nearest corner to JSQ).
Pavonia Ave (Behind Courthouse).
Back to Newark Ave to Grove PATH.
Columbus Drive.
Marin Blvd to Newport Mall/ Gangemi Drive (6th).

There might be other routes.

Do you guys know anything about the "dollar bus" or "vans"? I understand that they run on Palisade Avenue very frequently to for example downtown, like Grove Street Path on their way to Newport. I guess the confusing part is that the vans say Journal Square to Newport, but doesn't look like to me that they go to Journal Square.
Do you know how to pay for the fare? E.g. can you pre purchase tickets, or do you need to have exact change in hand ($1.25)?
