2 bus firms get $1.7M in anti-terrorism funds
Monday, May 18, 2009 Two local bus companies have received more than $1.7 million in Homeland Security grants to help prevent and respond to terrorist attacks. Hoboken-based Academy Express received $1.3 million and Coach U.S.A., which owns Jersey City-based Red & Tan, received $444,000, officials said. Advertisement "The money will be used to increase our awareness around terrorism and to be ready to assist," said John Emberson, a district manager with Coach U.S.A. Bus drivers will be taught how to spot suspicious activity and what to do when they see it, allowing for "extra eyes out in the field," he said. "Depending on what's going on we may have a very specific role to play," such as transporting people out of Manhattan during a blackout, Emberson added. Academy Express did not respond to requests for comment. AMY SARA CLARK
