Most likely what just happened was a "waffling" of the tectonic plate which ends in the area of the Meadowlands out by Route 3. For eons this remnant of a major glacial movement that was born from a primordial swamp, the largest home for mastodons and the like in the world has bumped about due to a "gassing" effect still happening today. It's kind of like your stomach settling after a big meal. Nothing to worry about but expect more in the future.

Tremors happen around here - although rare.

I remember this one in 2001
http://www.seismo-watch.com/EQS/AB/20 ... 7.NY2.6/011027.NY2.6.html

It sounded more like a big bomb though (and it was right after 9/11 so it freeked me out at the time badly)

I know i felt a tremor back in the 80s or so when there was a gas explosion down the turnpike by Linden. There was also a small earthquake in the 80s that was felt here in NJ.
If it really was a earthquake the other night, im sure the JJ or some horrible reporter would of covered it in that paper.

No. Where do you live?

If it rattled your bookshelves, I'm surprised I didn't feel it.
I remember snapping awake bolt upright for a early AM tremor back in the early 80's in NYC.

It does happen.

Did anyone else feel tremors early Saturday morning---at about 5am? I don't think I live close enough to the trains or turnpike to explain the sensation that my house was swaying a bit, with stuff on the bookcase rattling. But maybe I do. It is the second time I have noticed this in about a 4-month period.

NOPE, but i sure felt the ground move on Friday night.....
