Census: Growth in NY state concentrated in NYC area
Associated Press - March 19, 2009 5:55 AM ET ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Population losses continue across much of upstate New York, while New York City's population keeps growing modestly. That's according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates being released today. The 2008 estimates for counties and metropolitan areas look at the 53 counties north of Westchester and Rockland. Out of those 53 counties, 33 posted population losses of less than 1% over the year. That includes Erie County, which includes Buffalo, with a 0.3% population loss to 909,845. Rural Lewis County in northern New York had the steepest rate of decline -- 0.8% to 26,176. The fastest gaining counties in the state were Staten Island and Orange County, which both grew nearly 1% over the year. New York state's population grew by 0.3% to 19.5 million, while the New York City metro region area grew 0.4%. On the Net http://www.census.gov/ Copyright 2009 The Associated Press.
