I wrote GANGS? (with a question mark) because the Jersey Journal article quoted a fellow DHS student talking about a related armed "gang" incident last week - it was confirmed by a City spokesman Stan H. Eason -- and not that it went unreported until just now: Quote: From the above Jersey Journal article:

Why did you put the word "GANGS" in the headline? This sounds like high school kids being jerks. Be careful about throwing the G word around too much, especially on this site.

DICKINSON TURMOIL
Epps: 3 arrested pupils put hands on cops Tuesday, November 18, 2008 By PAUL KOEPP JOURNAL STAFF WRITER and JENNIFER KIM Two 16-year-olds and a 15-year-old were arrested yesterday at Dickinson High School in Jersey City after fighting with police officers, officials said. Advertisement "It seems like something started brewing over the lunch hour," said Superintendent of Schools Charles T. Epps Jr. "There was an altercation between students and police, and (the three students) were arrested because they put their hands on the policemen." The school beefed up its police presence yesterday after "some kind of altercation" involving students over the weekend, Epps added. One freshman said yesterday's incident started when a group of males entered the school with glass bottles. "I was walking in the school and I just saw glass bottles flying, one fell right in front of my face," the student said. With the help of 30 police officers - some with K-9 dogs - the school held a "rapid dismissal" yesterday 15 minutes ahead of the normal 3:05 p.m. release time. The area was cleared of students shortly after 3 p.m. Another student believed the fight might have been related to an incident that happened last week. "Last week, there were some guys from a gang that came in with machetes and guns, and it happened again today," the student said. The teens arrested yesterday were not charged with carrying weapons. School officials could not be reached yesterday afternoon to comment on what students said. However, officials said students must pass through metal detectors and have their bags searched before they can enter the school. City spokesman Stan H. Eason confirmed that an incident involving police took place at the school last week, but declined to elaborate, saying the incident is still under investigation. ========================= 5 Dickinson High students charged after battling cops, police say by Paul Koepp/The Jersey Journal Monday November 17, 2008, 1:31 PM Five students were arrested at Dickinson High School after fighting with cops over the lunch hour today, officials said. The high school will have a "rapid dismissal" at about 2:50 p.m., 15 minutes earlier than normal, to ensure that the building can be cleared by the time police officers at the school are off duty, Jersey City Schools Superintendent Charles Epps said. Epps said the high school had beefed up its police presence today after there was "some kind of altercation" involving students over the weekend. "It seems like something started brewing over the lunch hour," he said.
