The money was shrink wrapped probably just to keep it together, so they can package it like bricks. Drug smugglers do they same. They wrap drugs in plastic then, coat it with vaseline or another substance, and then wrap t again. It supposedly masks the smell. Then they pull out panels of the car and hide it under the fenders and in the wheel wells. In a routine "search" most local cops will just check the glove box, interior and the trunk...they don't start ripping apart the car.

Police find $1.6M in hidden car compartment

State Police say three men suspected of running a money laundering operating in northern New Jersey had more than loose change inside their cars.

Police arrested 39-year-old Luis Reyes of Jersey City, 31-year-old Carlos Roman of Lyndhurst, and 29-year-old Mario Reynoso of Newark after finding more than $1.6 million in cash hidden inside an expensive SUV Reyes was driving.

More than $35,000 was in a center console and $1,000 in the glove box. The rest, police say, was inside shrink-wrapped packages hidden in the car's interior panels.

Police say more cash, a semiautomatic handgun and money laundering equipment were found inside homes connected to the men.

The men have been charged with money laundering and conspiracy. It was not immediately clear if they had attorneys.
