Teen worker robbed of store cash

An 18-year-old shoe store employee was robbed at gunpoint after she left Jersey City's Newport Centre Mall Saturday night with the day's receipts, officials said.

When police responded to the bank behind the mall at 9:45 p.m., the woman said she left the mall with $1,162 in her purse and as she went to the night deposit slot of the bank a man wearing a motorcycle helmet approached her and stuck the muzzle of a revolver into her rib cage, reports said.

When she didn't hand over the cash, she and the robber began to struggle and he put her in a headlock before snatching the money from her purse, reports said.

He ran to a nearby motorcycle and rode away southbound on Washington Boulevard, reports said.

Why would a business owner send an 18 year old girl out in the dark with all that cash? It would be safer locked up in the store over night. And why would anyone start a tussle with someone who is sticking a gun in your ribs? Me? I woulda handed over the boss's money pronto, but then again, I'm not an 18 year old girl.

you would think after the same type of robbery one year ago they would be smarter....there is a thread somewhere on here with that game store that had a similar situation.

she should not have been taking the days reciepts alone to deposit, I worked in retail and we were required to send a minimum of 2 employees with the days reciepts.

A thief got away with a $12,000 diamond ring after strolling into a jewelry store at Jersey City's Newport Centre Mall yesterday and asking to see the merchandise, officials said.

The man walked into Whitehall Jewelers at 3:15 p.m. and asked the assistant manager to show him a diamond ring, reports said.

The employee handed the man a 1.62-carat diamond mounted on a platinum ring and asked him, "What do you think?"

But the man pocketed the ring and darted from the store, reports said.

The store manager, who was just outside the store when the man ran off, told police she chased the him outside the mall

She then saw him get into a "dark colored" vehicle and drive away, report said.

Anyone with information on the theft is asked to call the Jersey City Police Department tipline at (201) 547-JAIL.
