Cops: Clothes iron used to beat man
Monday, August 25, 2008 A 49-year-old homeless man was in critical condition early Saturday after he was savagely beaten in the head and face, police said. The man said his girlfriend and a man used a pipe and a wrench to beat him in her home on Sheffield Street and Rutgers Avenue around 2:26 a.m., police said. The man was conscious but bleeding from his ears and the back of his head, and he was listed in critical condition at Jersey City Medical Center. He was treated for a broken jaw, fractured facial bone and cuts to his face, authorities said. Police could not find a pipe, but they found a clothes iron they think was used in the attack, reports said. The victim, who said he was drunk, claimed his cell phone and $500 were taken from him, but his phone was found in his pocket, police said. Officers interviewed a resident of the house where the attack took place, but no arrests were made, according to police. CHARLES HACK
