Charged with having gun, 'dum dum' bullets

Monday, August 04, 2008

Police took an illegal revolver packed with "dum-dum" bullets off the street early Saturday morning, Jersey City police reports said.

These bullets, also called hollow-point bullets, are designed to expand upon impact, police said.

Police officers on routine patrol spotted Akiba Adams, 32, of Lafayette Street, at Stegman Street near Ocean Avenue with a large revolver in his waistband just before 1 a.m., reports said.

Cops saw Adams stop to show the weapon to another man, reports said.

When they approached, Adams fled west on Stegman Street and hurled the gun into an empty lot, reports said.

Adams stumbled and tripped and struggled with cops before they were able to handcuff him, reports said.

Police recovered a Taurus .357 Magnum packed with six dum-dum bullets.

Adams, who has "numerous" open warrants and is prohibited from possessing a weapon due to a previous conviction, was charged with weapons possession, police said.
